Overview of careers in the funds industry
 

There are a wide variety of careers available in the funds industry. In order to understand how these careers fit into the overall scheme of things, we identify below some of the key players and the roles they perform. Click on any of the links for more details.

the fund promoter -  markets and sells the investment opportunity to the investors
the investment manager who makes the investment decisions to try and increase the value of the fund
the Management Company / fund administrator whose responsibility it is to make sure the fund is managed properly.
 
Shareholder services (which includes liaising with shareholders, share dealing and register maintenance)

Box Management (relevant to UK only)

Compliance
The trustee / depositary acts on behalf of investors to ensure the Manager is acting in compliance with the regulations. The trustee / depositary is also responsible for the custody / safekeeping but this is routinely outsourced to large custodian banks
The custodian holds the assets of the funds in safekeeping for the investors. Is responsible for such things as the collection of income and processing of corporate actions.
 
There are then also the support services such as IT, HR, Finance, Internal Audit etc and of course the external supports such as Auditors, Legal Advisers and Consultants.

NOTE: With the growth in outsourcing it is not uncommon for the Management Company to outsource some of its functions to one or more Third Party Administrators (TPAs), eg. to a fund accounting TPA and a transfer agency TPA
